What Is Rental Assistance?

TL;DR

Rental assistance is a lifeline for families in Albany County facing eviction or housing insecurity. At Laramie Interfaith, we provide direct support, including rent and utility assistance, help with past-due payments, and guidance through community service applications. During the pandemic, our team distributed nearly $7.5 million through the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP), helping to keep over 1,600 households housed. Today, we continue this mission locally thanks to donors, volunteers, and partners. Explore how our program works, what documents you’ll need, and how to access help—or get involved to support neighbors in need.

When unexpected challenges arise, keeping up with rent can become overwhelming. In Laramie, the difference between staying housed and facing eviction often comes down to whether families can access timely support. That’s where rental assistance comes in—a service designed to prevent homelessness and keep neighbors stably housed.

At Laramie Interfaith, rental assistance is one of the core ways we help community members weather financial crises, avoid eviction, and remain secure in their homes.

Why Does Rental Assistance Exist?

Housing is the foundation of stability. Without it, everything else—work, health, education, family life—becomes harder. Rental assistance exists to:

  • Prevent homelessness by covering rent when families fall behind.
  • Support community health by reducing the ripple effects of eviction and housing instability.
  • Bridge temporary gaps caused by job loss, illness, or unexpected bills.

In Albany County, housing costs have risen in recent years while wages for many families remain flat. Rental assistance ensures that short-term struggles don’t spiral into long-term crises.

A Look Back: The Emergency Rental Assistance Program

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, rental assistance became more critical than ever. Through the federally funded Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP), Laramie Interfaith distributed nearly $7.5 million to help more than 1,600 households in Albany County stay housed (Annual Report 2023).

While ERAP has ended, Laramie Interfaith continues to provide local rental assistance thanks to donors, community partnerships, and ongoing support from residents who believe in neighbors helping neighbors.

Why Rental Assistance Matters

Rental assistance doesn’t just help with bills—it preserves dignity, security, and stability. For families facing eviction, even one month of support can mean the difference between staying in their home and losing everything.

By preventing homelessness, rental assistance also:

  • Reduces strain on shelters and emergency services.
  • Keeps children stable in their schools.
  • Helps adults focus on work and health, instead of survival.
  • Strengthens the overall well-being of the Laramie community.
