Hunger exists right here in Albany County—where over 6,000 residents face food insecurity. At Laramie Interfaith’s food pantry, volunteers play a key role in offering neighbors not just food, but dignity and compassion. From sorting groceries to helping families shop with respect, every hour of your time makes a difference. Volunteering is easy to start and deeply rewarding. Join us in fighting hunger and building a stronger Laramie—one caring act at a time.
When we think of hunger, we often picture big cities or far-off places. But the truth is, food insecurity is a very real issue right here in our own community.
In fact, Albany County has the highest food insecurity rate in all of Wyoming – more than 6,000 of our neighbors struggle to access nutritious food. That could be a student in your class, a family down the street, or a coworker you chat with daily. Hunger isn’t always visible, but it’s here in Laramie. The good news? Each of us can help change that.
At Laramie Interfaith’s food pantry, volunteers are the friendly faces that keep everything running. You might spend a morning sorting canned goods and fresh produce, checking for quality, and stocking the shelves. You could be greeting visitors with a smile and helping them check in or find what they need. Often, it feels like working in a little neighborhood grocery store, one where everyone is treated with respect.
One of the most meaningful parts of volunteering is helping families shop with dignity. Instead of handing out a pre-packed box, we let our pantry clients choose the foods that work best for their family. When volunteering, you’re not just restocking beans or carrying bags, you’re making sure people feel cared for and respected. Volunteers often tell us how rewarding it is to see relief on a parent’s face or to hear a child say “Thank you!” with genuine gratitude. It’s a chance to connect with your neighbors, hear their stories, and offer a hand up during a tough time.
Getting involved is easy, and we love welcoming new helping hands! Here are a few simple steps to start volunteering with Laramie Interfaith:
(And of course, if you ever have questions, our team is just a phone call or visit away. We’re here to support you as you support others.)
Volunteering is about more than stocking shelves or sorting food. It’s about human connection and compassion. When you volunteer at the food bank, you’re doing more than filling empty plates; you’re showing up for your neighbors. You’re telling a family going through a hard time that this community cares about them. Your warm greeting might be the first kindness they’ve felt all week. That hour or two you give not only puts groceries in someone’s cupboard, but also hope in their heart.
And here’s the beautiful thing: volunteering tends to give back to you, too. Many people find that helping others “increases self-confidence” and gives a sense of purpose. You might walk out of the pantry with tired feet but a fuller heart, knowing you were part of something genuinely good. It’s neighbors helping neighbors, just as our town’s spirit inspires us to do.
Ready to help fight hunger right here at home? We invite you to join us. Every extra set of hands makes a real difference in making sure no one in Laramie goes to bed hungry. Visit Laramie Interfaith to learn more and sign up as a volunteer. Your time and compassion mean more to the families you’ll help and to the community we build together than you think. Thank you for being the good that our world needs.
